Channel 8, ailand, expands into HD with PlayBox Technology

Thai television broadcaster, Channel 8, has chosen a complete playout automation system from PlayBox Technology as the core of a new high definition service. Based in Bangkok, Channel 8 offers a wide range of programme content encompassing news, documentaries and entertainment.

Initial planning for the HD system began in 2013, comments Pongpan Budprom, Technical Supervisor at Channel 8. PlayBox Technology was the logical partner both for its proven experience in playout system design and its ability to provide a fully integrated solution including character generation and graphics. The system is centred on master and backup AirBox servers together with two TitleBox servers and one ingest server. AirBox gives us the freedom to ingest programmes and interstitials in a wide range of file formats. We can then simply add selected files to the playlist. The installation also includes 100 terabytes of content storage plus third party routing equipment and glue. Another great advantage of choosing a PlayBox Technology system is the local support which the company can provide. Any time we have questions or need advice, we just pick up the phone and get the support we need.

AirBox provides automated content playout for satellite channels, cable head-ends, over-the-air broadcasters and corporate TV users. The latest version incorporates a GPU-enhanced graphics mixing engine which allows video rotation effects and depth-order laying effects to be performed in real time. Logo animation facilities are also added for applications such as titling, captioning or channel branding. In its automated playout mode, AirBox allows fixed-time scheduling for weeks ahead. AirBox can be used for live production as well as automated playout. Every clip in the playlist, except the one currently playing, can be trimmed, edited or repositioned seamlessly without stopping the current playout session.

TitleBox delivers on-air graphics which can be controlled interactively. Multi-layered simultaneous crawls, rolls, animated logos, clocks and text templates can be activated by a mouse click. TitleBox provides total control during on-air session, including text selection, running speed and transitions.
