Proangle Media Invests In Eight Panasonic AK-HC800 HD Studio Cameras

ProAngle Media (Carson, CA), one of Southern California's preeminent producers of sports and entertainment programming, recently purchased eight AK-HC3800 HD studio cameras that will be used in its production trucks and Flypacks.

ProAngle, the winner of numerous regional Emmy and Telly awards, numbers the Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Lakers, ESPN and KCBS/KCAL among its diverse client base.

The company had been a longtime user of Panasonic's prior generation AG-HDX900 DVCPRO HD cameras for live sports. Those cameras served us well for years, but we wanted the ability to shoot in 1080 formats, said ProAngle principal Steve Rangel. What really sold us is the ability of the HC3800 to connect with its companion camera control unit (AK-HCU200) via a single SMPTE 311 cable for transmission of uncompressed video up to 1000 meters, for power, control and many other functions.

Being able to break into single-mode gives us tremendous flexibility in arenas and other sports venues, he added.

ProAngle has already utilized the HC3800s in FlyPack configurations to cover an outdoor swimming/diving event and indoor presentations. The camera works great, looks terrific, and we've cut our set-up time by at least a third, Rangel said. We like the simplicity of putting the system together, with nice touches like the viewfinder slipping on onto the camera body. We've been able to totally get away from the bulkiness of our previous cameras.

Rangel said that he is redoing the company's production units over the summer to get the HCU200 control units on board, and plans to use the HC3800s on assignments for ESPN, the Silver Chalice Networks and other top sports producers.
