IBM Korea (CEO Shirley Yu-Tsui, http://www.ibm.com/kr) today announced that it supplied the IBM Aspera high-speed data transfer solution to Korean VOD (video on demand) content provider Bloomsbury Media (Bloomsbury).
Bloomsbury receives VOD titles from 6 major Hollywood content providers and distributes to cable providers across Asia, including Mongolia. Due to the nature of their business, Bloomsbury needed to enable their distribution infrastructure with a more effective way of transferring large volumes of video content to partners located all over the region. Without the IBM Aspera solution, Bloomsbury faced major business process issues, as large data transfers were too slow, unstable with frequent failures and data loss..
With the new IBM Aspera Solution, Bloomsbury is able to effectively distribute 1,500 exclusive VOD titles to multiple cable operators. Transferring up to 50GB of video content used to take 5 6 hours at best and up to a few days. It can now be completed within an hour. Thanks to the dramatic increase in speed and simplification of business processes brought by the implementation of the IBM Aspera software, Bloomsbury is now able to deliver about 600 new VOD titles per year.
The company also achieved significant operational cost reductions by eliminating overlapping transfer fees. In the past, the files were directly transferred from the studios in Hollywood to a cable provider in Mongolia without going through Bloomsbury. This created numerous issues in file management and incurred redundant transfer expenses. With the introduction of Aspera, the VOD titles are sent from the Hollywood studios to Bloomsbury who centrally manages all content, and are then delivered to the individual cable providers in accordance with pre-established purchase conditions. As a result, video asset management became a much smoother and more systematic process.
The IBM Aspera solution is providing Bloomsbury with the tools to expand their business to an increased number of cable providers in multiple countries. Meanwhile, Bloomsbury is looking at the Aspera solution to enable new business opportunities for them, including the development of a new video streaming service.
