HE MANSOUR BIN NASSAR, HEAD OF SUPREME COMMITTEE OF SCC ELECTIONS, THANKS VOTERS AND ORGANISERS FOR MAKING FIRST PHASE OF POLLS A HISTORIC SUCCESS
In the first of its kind exercise, a total of 24,952 citizens (13,794 male and 11,158 female) from across the Emirate of Sharjah out of a population of 78,457 have registered themselves to take part in the upcoming Sharjah Consultative Council (SCC) elections, to be held on January 30 to 31, 2016. According to HE Mansour bin Nassar, Head of the Supreme Committee of SCC Elections, 31.8 per cent of Sharjah's eligible voters got themselves registered at the Sharjah Municipality and at centres set up across the emirate to take part in the polls to the highest decision making body in Sharjah.
Hailing the first ever registration process for the SCC polls as historic, HE Mansour bin Nassar said: We have completed the first phase of the Sharjah Consultative Council elections, laying a solid foundation for the second phase, which will finalise candidacy and involves the challenge of voting for those who deserve to be chosen to represent the people of Sharjah in the august body.
The Head of the Supreme Committee of SCC Elections said that the number of eligible voters in the Emirate who have registered for the polls is encouraging. Giving details about the electoral exercise, he said that out of 41,725 citizens, some 9,937 people (5,522 male and 4,415 female) registered in Sharjah City to cast their vote in the upcoming polls.
In Kalba, out of 12,244 eligible voters, 3,759 people (2,119 male and 1,640 female) registered to vote. Similarly, out of 11,636 eligible voters in Khorfakkan, 4,944 citizens (2,676 male and 2,268 female) registered to vote. Out of 2,233 citizens in Madam, some 1,087 people (592 male and 495 female) registered to vote.
In Dibba Al Hisn, out of 4,874 eligible voters, some 1,862 people (1,022 male and 840 female) registered themselves at local centres. In Mleiha, out of 1,247 voters, some 854 people (472 male and 382 female) registered to exercise their right.
In Hamriya, out of 654 eligible voters, some 521 people (276 male and 245 female) got themselves registered. In Dhaid, out of total 3,050 citizens, some 1,368 people (775 male and 593 female) came forward to register themselves. In Al Batayeh, out of 794 eligible voters, 620 people (340 male and 280 female) registered themselves to take part in the polls.
According to the statistics, the majority of Sharjah's population is young and is below 40 (14,926) while some 7,507 citizens are in the age group of 40 to 60. There are 2,519 people who are in the age group of above 60. The Emirate has 9,950 citizens who are university graduates or equal while 6,025 citizens are reported to have studied up to intermediate level. Some 3,722 citizens studied up to high school while some 5,000 people did not specify.
Thanking everyone for their participation in the first critical phase of the SCC polls, HE Mansour bin Nasser said: My sincere thanks to everyone who has made this exercise a remarkable success, especially those manning registration centres and organisers who have proven their competence and dedication by making the first phase of the polls a smoother affair. I would also like to thank the son and daughters of Sharjah who came forward to take part in this historic electoral experience and registered their names, bringing the number of registered citizens to 25,000. This figure, given the novelty of the first-in-the region experience, makes us proud of the citizens of Sharjah.
The registration process for the SCC elections was formally launched on December 6 and continued till December 19 at the Sharjah Municipality and other dedicated centres in Sharjah City and in centres across the Emirat.
The SCC Electoral College has been divided into nine constituencies to ensure all citizens are able to register and vote for their respective candidates.
Elections to the Consultative Council have been held since 2006, and the process has undergone constant improvement and fine-tuning all these years to ensure people's empowerment and participation in the political process.
