Sky has acquired the rights to NBC's gritty drama Aquarius to air exclusively on Sky Atlantic across all of its markets in the UK, Ireland, Italy Germany and Austria. The series stars David Duchovny (The X Files) in an acclaimed return to television screens. It begins in the UK & Ireland on Tuesday 11 August at 9pm on Sky Atlantic. Aquarius was acquired from ITV Studios Global Entertainment.
Edgy, addictive and visually stunning, Aquarius stars David Duchovny as Los Angeles homicide detective Sam Hodiak. Sam's investigation into a missing girl leads him into the dark activities of a strange cult run by a small-time but charismatic leader Charles Manson, portrayed by Gethin Anthony (Game of Thrones).
Gary Davey, Sky's Managing Director of Content, commented
I'm thrilled Sky has secured Aquarius for our customers across Europe. With an excellent script and high production values as well as an acclaimed cast, it will make for gripping television. Exclusively on Sky Atlantic, Aquarius further strengthens Sky's position as the home of quality drama across Europe.
Dan Gopal, EVP EMEA Distribution and Global Digital Partners for ITV Studios Global Entertainment said
Sky's reputation for broadcasting the best international content makes it the perfect home for Aquarius, a compelling drama which combines intelligent writing, thrilling storyline, the star power of David Duchovny and the iconic fashion and music of the 1960s. We are delighted that it will launch on Sky Atlantic in the UK during August, while the series continues its run in the US, and we look forward to its forthcoming debut in Sky's other European territories later this year. It's great that Sky's audience will be able to enjoy the show across the full offering of Sky's linear and on-demand services in each market, whether at home or on the go.
The 13 x 60 minute drama series is set in 1967 at the height of the summer of love' and years before Manson notoriously masterminded the horrific Tate-LaBianca murders for which he is now imprisoned. The story follows the work of Hodiak as he enlists the help of a young detective Brian Shafe, played by Grey Damon (Friday Night Lights), to aid his missing-persons investigation and to infiltrate the cult leaders expanding family' as Manson recruits vulnerable young men and women to join his dubious cause. The series also stars Emma Dumont (Inherent Vice) and Claire Holt (The Vampire Diaries).
Sky has 21 million customers across five countries: the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany and Austria. Aquarius is the latest in a line of big dramas to air in all five of Sky's home markets following the successes of Sky's original production Fortitude and series 5 of HBO's global phenomenon Game of Thrones.
Aquarius was acquired for Sky Atlantic UK, Ireland, Austria and Germany by Sophie Judge, Acquisitions Manager, Sky Entertainment, and joins a deal announced earlier this year for Sky Italia to screen the series. It was acquired from Jayne Redpath, SVP Sales for UK/Eire and Pan-Territory and Andre Renaud, Senior Sales Executive for SE EMEA for ITV Studios Global Entertainment, which distributes the show internationally. Aquarius is produced by Tomorrow Studios, a partnership between ITV Studios and Marty Adelstein. Following its first airing on Tuesday 11 August on Sky Atlantic in the UK and Ireland, the drama will broadcast in other Sky territories later in the year.
