Yang Yanyi from Ningbo Appointed Ambaador to the EU

Yang Yanyi, born in 1955, starts her mission in Brussels this week as Chinas ambassador to the EU. She previously held a position in Beijing as assistant minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee. [news.china.com.cn]

China has appointed a senior official from the Communist Party of Chinas (CPC) international relations department to take charge of its dealings with the European Union.

Yang Yanyi, born in 1955, started her mission in Brussels this week as Chinas ambassador to the EU. She previously held a position in Beijing as assistant minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee at the beginning of January. Her predecessor, Wu Hailong, will take up a new position soon as Chinas representative to the UNs office in Geneva.

In a message on Chinas EU mission website, Yang said Sino-EU relations are expected to embrace another wonderful decade following 10 years of comprehensive strategic partnership since 2003.

Yang previously worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for a long time before joining the Partys international relations department from 2010 to 2013.

She hails from Ningbo, in east Chinas Zhejiang Province. She studied at the English Department of the Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages (now Beijing Foreign Studies University) from 1971 to 1975. She started her working career with the head office of China International Travel Service in 1975 and then joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 1980, where she took positions successively as Deputy Division Director, First Secretary, Counselor, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs, Deputy Director-General of the Policy Research Office and its successor the Policy Research Department, and Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs.

She worked in the Permanent Mission of the Peoples Republic of China to the United Nations in New York as First Secretary and then Counselor from 1992 to 1996. She served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Peoples Republic of China to Negara Brunei Darussalam from 2004 to 2007, and assumed the office of Assistant Minister of the International Department of the CPC Central Committee in December 2010.

The 16th European Union-China summit - the first involving Chinas new generation of leaders - drew to a close in Beijing on November 21, 2013, with a number of announcements which have the potential to take the relationship forward to a new stage.

The headlines were an agreement to target by the year 2020 for EU-China trade of US$1 trillion, up from US$546 billion in 2012, and an agreement that the two sides would negotiate an agreement to try to promote higher levels of foreign direct investment in both directions.

As well as the trade and investment issues at the heart of the early development of relations between China and the European Union, there is now much greater engagement in political and security issues, and a "third pillar" which focuses more on interaction between societies in Europe and China.
