GoPro Perspective: Full Moon

Helmed by Director and Producer Leanne Pelosi of Runway Films, Full Moon thematically tackles the past, present, and future of womens snowboarding. Pelosi, a force in snowboarding herself, is both paying tribute to the history of womens snowboarding and showcasing the evolution and progression of the sport today. Featuring both legends that paved the way and current atheltes at the top of their game, inlcuding GoPro Athletes Jamie Anderson and Elena Hight, Full Moon is a tour de force and a big step for womens snowboardng and the sport as a whole.

We caught up with Pelosi to talk FM and to get her take on using GoPro cameras during production. Check out our chat below and take a few minutes to nerd out on some incredible GoPro footage captured during the filming of Full Moon.

GoPro: Full Moon is about the past, present, and future of womens snowboarding. Why was it important for you to have this theme?

Leanne Pelosi: Its important to see where we came from, because thats our history, thats all we have. In this film, we are talking about going back an arm's length and showing the connection between the generations. It was really interesting, I think, to gather perspectives from all the ages and see how we are all influenced from one another. Its the full circle.

Now that this journey is complete, what does it feel like to watch the final piece and share it with the world?

LP: Im so proud of myself for even stepping to the plate in accomplishing this. It was a dream as a kid to become a pro snowboarder, and I looked up to all these amazing women. So to be able to produce this and ride in it was a really cool feeling. It came with its challenges, of course, but in the end Im so happy we made new connections, experiences and friendships thatll last a lifetime. Our hometown of Whistler gave us a standing ovation [at the Full Moon premiere] and my heart pretty much exploded. So grateful for the opportunity and I hope its the start of more!

What were some of the biggest obstacles in creating an all-female production?Weather was out of our control, but we dealt with it. We had two solid not-so-great Whistler seasons, but we actually looked at the mountains differently and rode bigger lines versus focusing on traditional freestyle that everyone is used to seeing us do. Other challenges were financing (always), and being a producer and rider at the same time. I really wanted the girls to know that this project was for the greater good and not to toot our own horns. We made this about having fun.

How did GoPro help out with your production, especially in hard-to-access areas like Alaska?

The perspective from GoPros mounted on our helmets in Alaska just shows how gnarly it really is. From a film perspective, from a heli or another angle, it sometimes doesnt do it justice how difficult it can be riding lines fluently with no hesitation.
