S o Paulo, October 12, 2024 - This Saturday, at the 22nd International Literary Festival of Paraty - FLIP, and as part of the Flip+ round table From Book to Screen: One Hundred Years of Solitude , Netflix addressed the challenges of delivering the screen adaptation of a story that has left its mark on generations.

The discussion brought together screenwriters Natalia Santa and Camila Brug s, as well as Francisco Ramos, vice president of Content at Netflix in Latin America, and offered the audience insight into the creative process and the complexities of bringing the literary universe of Gabriel Garc a M rquez to the screen. The chat was hosted by Alejandro Chacoff, literature editor of Piau magazine.

The writers talked about why they were inspired to get involved in such an ambitious project and revealed the challenges and fine details that went into adapting One Hundred Years of Solitude. "Bringing to life characters that inhabit so many peoples imagination is a huge challenge. Our mission was to honor the richness of the novel without losing sight of its depth and magic," commented Natalia Santa.

"The series had to capture the emotions that the book awakens, while bearing in mind that we are dealing with a different language. It was a challenging balancing act: remaining faithful to the novel while creating a bold visual experience," said Camila Brug s, who emphasized the responsibility inherent to the film adaptation. The big advantage was that, when we had doubts and had to find our way back, we just went to the book, and all the answers were there, he added. Francisco Ramos highlighted the importance of the legacy that this adaptation would leave. "From the beginning, we established certain cornerstones for the project with the Garc a M rquez family: it would be filmed in Spanish and produced in Colombia. These elements preserve the essence of the work while ensuring that the legacy resonates, and a significant cultural and economic impact is made on Colombian films," he explained.

Based on Gabriel Garcia Marquezs first novel, the series follows several generations of the Buend a family in the mythical village of Macondo, where love, insanity, wars and ancient curses are interwoven in a fabulous narrative that enfolds you. The adaptation promises to honor the magic that is the essence of the novel while exploring the universal themes that have made it a timeless classic.

The first eight episodes of One Hundred Years of Solitude premiere on Netflix on December 11.
