SPAA WELCOMES SCREEN AUSTRALIA'S DRAFT GUIDELINES FOR INTERACTIVE AND MULTI-PLATFORM FUNDING

The Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA) welcomes the release of Screen Australia's draft guidelines for interactive and multi-platform funding.

These guidelines follow Arts Minister Simon Crean's announcement of a $20 million commitment to support producers of interactive entertainment at the 2012 SPAA Conference. This three-year package is a significant step forward for the screen industry, recognising that convergence has brought with it not just substantial challenges but also exciting opportunities for local content.

It is great to see Screen Australia responding to the issues raised by SPAA during the consultation period. When compared to the $2 million spent in 2011/12, a minimum first year commitment of $2.5 million to fund multi-platform drama and documentary marks a meaningful increase, said Executive Director Matthew Deaner.

Screen Australia's distribution of funds includes:

$4-5 million for individual Game Production

$2-3 million for Games Enterprise to support the development and sustainable growth of games development businesses

$2-3 million for individual Multi-platform Drama Projects

$500,000 for interactive and multi-platform linear documentary projects

Approx. $400,000 for sector development and special initiatives.

I encourage the entire industry to read the draft guidelines and engage with this new phase consultation, particularly now that we have a firm indication of how the funds will be spent. It is important to consider the ways in which interactive entertainment may augment your projects and grow your audience in an ever-changing environment, concluded Deaner.
