Anyone remember when Keanu Reeves (a.k.a Neo) bent through space and time to do the impossible and dodge bullets? While that scene undoubtedly left everyone ready unleash their inner Matrix (limbo, anyone?), people were also quick to see the potential of cinematic special effects.
Here we are almost 20 years later, and GoPro is throwing it back to the infamous bullet scene with even more up our sleeves. In traditional GoPro fashion, we took it to the next level with an incredible 100-camera array capable of manipulating movement through space and time. Basically, we created a circle made up of 100 GoPro cameras, side-by-side, shooting simultaneously. This camera rig is able to spit out content that shows the most dynamic and fluid version of whatever is being captured. Equipped with this new 100-array, GoPro was determined to test the limits of space and time, which led us straight to Oakland's own TURFinc.
Led by the talented Johnny 5 Lopez, TURFinc combines the best moves of breakdancing, street style and classical prowess into some of the most expressive, intriguing performances to hit the Bay. If you haven't heard of Turf before, it's a street dance style that originated in Oakland and aims to give people an outlet for expressing their life stories and experiences. For many of the dancers, they explain how Turf is a way to get off the streets and instead positively channel their energy through fast-paced, dynamic performances. GoPro couldn't pass up the opportunity to collaborate, so we used the rig to capture an immersive look into the crew bustin' its best moves.
In this edit, entitled Turf in the Bay, GoPro joins TURFinc at The Lab Gallery locations in San Francisco and Oakland to test that the new 100-camera technology works at 100 percent.
While we have been working on this technology for a while, Turf in the Bay was the first time we let it loose, and the result is enough to get anyone on the dance floor. With all 100 of the cameras rolling at 24fps, the footage takes on a cinematic feel while also enabling us to slow it down without sacrificing quality in post-production. Our cinematographers got up close and personal, following the dancers as they jumped, spun and dropped it low. Without a single static camera, the finished Turf in the Bay final edit, seems to seamlessly flow as an uninterrupted dance performance. Hence, time and space were effectively manipulated-take that, Neo.
We were stoked to work with TURFinc to unleash our latest 100-camera rig and merge innovation, storytelling and artistic expression to create Turf in the Bay. Turf dancing has the power to change lives for the better by giving the youth and the community an opportunity to share their stories and push their limits. It's groups like TURFinc that continue to inspire and encourage us at GoPro to follow our passions.
