Comedy is the language that everybody understands and it is a great medium and platform to bring together diverse countries, cultures and civilizations, said top stars of Arab stand-up comedy ahead of their grand performance at Al Majaz Amphitheatre on Friday, February 17. Responding to media queries ahead of the first Sharjah stand-up comedy night, Comedia 3al Wagef, being hosted by Sharjah Media Centre, Arab comedy stars said they looked forward to performing at Al Majaz Amphitheatre event.

If you bring people together in one place and make them laugh, it means you have reached their hearts. You can change any negative perception they have of you and have them listen to what you want to say. The ability to make people laugh is a great gift and honour, says Ali Al Sayed, known as the pioneer of stand-up comedy in the UAE and Comedian of the Year,' according to Esquire Middle East 2016.

Agreeing with him, Fahad Al Burtairi, known as Saudi Arabia's Seinfeld' and one of the stars of the Emirati film, From A to B, added: A comedian can serve as an ambassador for his culture, which inspires his work. And laughter is a universal language.

Mohammed Morgan of Egypt, star of the Kit Kat Comedy Break, said he believed that comedy is a language that everybody understands. It touches upon topics that are known to everyone. The world has become a small, open place, and this is why the language of comedy is understood by all. And like every other language, it has a vocabulary that can be nice or unkind and hurtful, which we try to refrain from using in our society, he explained.

The top Arab comics lauded the constant efforts by Sharjah, the Cultural Capital of the Arab and Islamic world, to support the art and cultural movement in the UAE and across the region. Sharjah has always led the way in supporting literature and art through its numerous initiatives, from Sharjah Biennial to Sharjah International Book Fair to Al Majaz Amphitheatre and the magnificent shows it hosts, said Al Butairi.

Al Sayed said he was excited about performing in Sharjah. Al Majaz Amphitheatre is among the most beautiful in the Arab World. The fact that Sharjah has invited us as comedians to perform at its iconic Amphitheatre asserts the Emirate's respect for comedy and its keenness to present art in all its forms and support it locally and internationally, he added.

The one-of-its-kind live show will also feature Bader Saleh, the YouTube sensation who boasts over 3 million subscribers to his hit show, Esh Elly, as well as Al Laila ma Bader Saleh on MBC, Ebrahim Al Khairallah, the finalist of Arabs Got Talent and the funnyman known for the popular hand puppet, Temsa7, and Kuwait's Ahmad Al Shimmari, another YouTube superstar in his own right and host of his own comedy club in Kuwait.

Al Majaz Amphitheatre, managed by Sharjah Media Centre, has been regularly hosting top Arab and international artists and musical icons since its inception in 2012, as part of its efforts to promote a culture of arts and appreciation of music in the Emirate and the UAE. Some of the top names who have performed at Al Majaz Amphitheatre in 2016 included Yanni, Marcel Khalife, Mohammed Abdu and Jolio Iglesias.
