Den Haag, 13 december 2022 - In 2021 waren bijna 2,5 miljoen Nederlanders slachtoffer van online criminaliteit.* Via slecht beveiligde slimme apparaten kunnen hackers je thuisnetwerk binnendringen. 91% van de Nederlandse huishoudens heeft n of meerdere slimme apparaten zoals een smart TV of slimme thermostaat. Slechts de helft geeft aan hun slimme apparaten regelmatig te updaten. Daarmee lopen zij het risico gehackt te worden. Om Nederlanders hier bewust van te maken voert het ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat de campagne Doe je updates'. Als onderdeel van de campagne probeerde een ethisch hacker bij een aantal huishoudens - met hun toestemming in het thuisnetwerk te komen. En op hun draadloze printer de kerstkaart te printen die je niet wilt ontvangen.
Hackers hebben aan n slecht beveiligd apparaat genoeg om bij je binnen te dringen. En zo bij je persoonlijke gegevens te komen. Ethisch hacker Dirk-Jan Bartels van Resillion werkte mee aan de campagne. Hij heeft als doel om mogelijke beveiligingslekken te vinden en te rapporteren: Omdat slimme apparaten verbonden zijn met je wifi-netwerk kunnen hackers via je slimme apparaten bij al jouw persoonlijke gegevens komen. Door je apparaten te updaten zorg je ervoor dat de nieuwste beveiliging op de apparaten staat. Zo maak je het criminele hackers veel moeilijker.
Kerstkaart die je niet wilt ontvangen
Bartels ging op pad door Nederland en probeerde bij huishoudens in het netwerk binnen te komen via onvoldoende beveiligde apparaten. Voorafgaand gaven de huishoudens toestemming om de hacker te laten testen of hun netwerk en apparaten goed genoeg beveiligd waren. Lukte het hem om in te breken, dan printte hij tot hun verrassing via de draadloze printer een kerstkaart met tips om hun digitale veiligheid te verbeteren. Het was goed om mensen op deze ludieke manier bewust te maken van mogelijke beveiligingsrisico's , aldus Bartels. Vaak lees je in het nieuws dat bedrijven gehackt worden, maar zoiets kan jou priv ook overkomen. Bij de huishoudens waar het lukte merkte je echt de verbazing. Gelukkig waren er ook mensen die al hun updates hadden gedaan en waar het dus niet lukte om in hun netwerk in te breken en de kerstkaart te printen. Of het nu om een bedrijf of huishouden gaat, het is gewoon belangrijk dat je je updates regelmatig doet.
Updates niet altijd automatisch
Niet alle slimme apparaten updaten automatisch, al wordt dit vaak wel gedacht. Ook krijg je niet altijd een melding als er een update klaarstaat. Daarom is het belangrijk om regelmatig zelf jouw slimme apparaten te checken op nieuwe updates. Dit doe je bij de meeste apparaten in de instellingen in de bijbehorende app. Door te updaten worden er naast nieuwe features, die je makkelijk ziet en herkent, ook vaak digitale kwetsbaarheden opgelost. Zo houd je je slimme apparaten veilig n bescherm je je netwerk tegen internetcriminelen.
Printers, huishoudelijke apparaten en schakelaars minst ge pdatet
Is je apparaat verbonden met internet? Dan is je apparaat slim. En is het verstandig om updates uit te voeren. Toch worden sommige slimme apparaten minder vaak ge pdatet. Zo updatet slechts 44% van de Nederlanders hun draadloze printer. Huishoudelijke apparaten zoals koelkasten en wasmachines (31%) en op afstand bedienbare schakelaars (27%) worden het minst ge pdatet.
