BT Sport to broadcast Baku 05

BT Sport and Baku 2015 have signed an agreement to provide daily coverage of the European Games, which will take place between 12-28 June, across its three channels, BT Sport Extra, and digital platforms. Yesterday marked the 50-day countdown to the beginning of the inaugural Games, Azerbaijan's first Olympic-level sporting event and the biggest and arguably most important event in its sporting history.

The deal is the latest in a series signed by Baku 2015, with the event's broadcast reach now stretching to all corners of Europe and across the globe. Agreements have been signed in the United States, Canada, Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Latin America and Arab countries as well as with a host of other European broadcasters. The Games will reach over a billion viewers worldwide.

Team GB has also used yesterday's milestone to announce that 153 athletes will be attending the Games, including London 2012 Taekwondo Gold Medallist Jade Jones.

Baku 2015 expects more than 6,000 athletes to compete and more than 3,000 team officials to attend the 17 days of the Games. Of the 20 sports represented at the first European Games, a total of 12 sports will offer qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Events will be hosted in 18 competition venues including newly-built venues for Gymnastics, BMX and Aquatics and a purpose-built 68,000-seat stadium for Athletics and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. 600,000 spectators are expected to attend.

The Games are a key part of Azerbaijan's efforts to put sport and youth at the centre of their nation's development, modernisation and economic diversification.
