EBU searches for 04 POLIS Journalism Fellow

The EBU is once again partnering with POLIS, the journalism think tank of the London School of Economics (LSE), to offer Members a research fellowship in London. The EBU is offering the scholarship on a competitive basis.

Applications are now open for the second month-long fellowship. It is open to journalists who wish to carry out a short piece of original research into an aspect of contemporary news media practice. The subject should be related to contemporary broadcast and/or online news with a particular interest in how media change is impacting on editorial, ethical and political and aspects of journalism.

Fellowship applications and supporting materials must be received by Friday 31 January 2014. All applications should be submitted in English and must consist of the following:

A completed application form;

An abstract of at least 400 words that sets out the issue you would like to address;

A study proposal that describes your methodology and outlines what you would do in London;

A curriculum vitae;

A signed letter of recommendation from your Editor-in-Chief, or Head of International Relations, that testifies to the significance of the proposed project and the applicants ability to carry it out.

The EBU will draw up a short-list of candidates and submit it to LSE POLIS to make a final decision. An announcement will be made on Tuesday 11 February.

On Monday 3 March 2014, the EBU-POLIS Journalism Fellow will begin work at the LSE under the supervision of the POLIS director, Professor Charlie Beckett, who is a former senior editor at BBC and ITN. The fellow will have access to Media and Communications Department lectures and the LSE library, as well as all POLIS and LSE events.

She or he will be facilitated to connect with news organisations, journalists and media researchers in the UK. The fellow will also have the opportunity to interview any relevant LSE Media and Communications staff.

The research fellow will be invited to give a research seminar during her or his stay in London and will also be expected to participate in the POLIS-BBC-EBU Journalism Conference on Friday 28 March 2014.
