Cape Film Commiion hosts International Emmy Semi-Finals in Cape Town

Last week the Cape Film Commission hosted the semi-final judging of the International Emmy TV awards category for TV movie and mini-series in the English language. The Cape Film Commission, in conjunction with its advisory board members (the Independent Producers Organisation, Documentary Filmmakers Association and South African Screen Federation) and its membership nominated judges to be considered for the judging session.

These judges were then reviewed by the International Emmys (International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) and the successful nominations were advised.

The judging took place over one day when approximately 8 hours of screen time was judged under the supervision of Jessica Franco from the Academy who had travelled from New York to oversee the event.

The submissions are viewed under strict guidelines by experienced jurors. The judging is confidential and placed in a sealed envelope that is then couriered to the International Emmy offices in New York where they are overseen by Ernst and Young.

Denis Lillie (CEO of the Cape Film Commission), Roberta Durrant, Zaheer Goodman-Bayat and Patrick Walton are all Members of the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Roberta is also currently the South African Ambassador for the International Emmys.

Denis Lillie comments Traditionally the Cape Film Commission have partnered with the DTI to enable the jurors to attend the International Emmy Awards Gala in New York which coincides with the prestigious World Television Festival. The DTI is currently in the approval process for the jurors to attend this year.

Last year Cape Town and our jurors received high profile coverage as the president of the IEmmys, Mr Bruce Paisner, attended the judging in Cape Town. This led to many mentions of our City and our filming capabilities during the Gala weekend and the World Television Festival. Our juror/members also made many valuable connections with the international television industry. Many buyers and producers attend the gala and festival which means that attendance is invaluable from a trade and investment promotions perspective.

The Cape Film Commission would like to thank Tsogo Sun for allowing the use of one of their luxury suites at the Cape Sun hotel in Strand Street, the facilities and the food provided during the course of the day were exceptional.

Judging also took place in Johannesburg for two additional categories hosted by Light and Dark Films and the National Film and Video Foundation.
