The John Murray Show on RT Radio will come to an end

The John Murray Show on RT Radio 1 will come to an end On Friday 3rd July, after five years on RT Radio1, The John Murray Show will come to a close.

John Murray will return in the autumn and will continue to broadcast on RT Radio 1 in a brand new role. Brendan O'Connor will present the 9am slot for the month of July.

Over the past five years, The John Murray Show offered an intelligent alternative for morning listening with a mix of serious and light content - in particular John's informal approach to politics, science, celebrity interviews, national & international news stories and everything in between. The show partnered the hugely popular TV series Operation Transformation. The show was also known to support Irish music and over the past two years, it teamed up with the Saturday Night Show to host one of the biggest music competitions ever for emerging artists. John and the team were well known to abandon studio to join about a thousand listeners for outings of The John Murray Show Walking Club. The Show has held walks in 16 counties. The show has brought together an extraordinary collaboration of leading Irish artists, including Sinead O'Connor and Danny O'Reilly, to produce 2 Christmas CD's in support of Aware raising several thousand Euros for the charity.

Head of RT Radio 1, Tom McGuire said: The John Murray Show has been at the heart of the RT Radio 1 schedule for the past five years. On weekday mornings it formed a new bridge between Morning Ireland and Today with Sean O Rourke. Particular initiatives like the John Murray walks around the country; the collaboration with Operation Transformation and the hugely popular charity CDs were among the highlights. Over the past decade the nine o clock daily show on RT Radio 1 has continued to develop and change. John Murray and the programme teams have a significant contribution to building the show. It is now opportune, this autumn, to renew and redesign this prime hour of radio. I look forward to seeing John Murray continue to play an important role as a significant and well loved voice on RT Radio 1.

I want to thank everyone who worked on the programme in that period but most of all I want to thank the listeners for their support and for making it all worthwhile. One of the highlights for me was the walks we did which brought us to communities all over Ireland. I am looking forward to returning in the autumn to a new role with the station."

RT Radio 1 will announce a new schedule in coming weeks.
