Let's be honest, if you pay the asking price for this microphone, you'd expect something of Rolls Royce quality to emerge from the extensive, well-padded packaging. DPA does not disappoint. Thanks to the mind-boggling array of digital technology that has been developed for the industry, today's audiences, artists, and management all expect gigs to sound as good or better than the record. Manufacturers over the last two decades have produced some stunning products, which are eagerly set up in acoustically appalling concrete boxes with zero acoustic treatment, but that's another issue The developments in PA technology have enabled us to hear enough detail in the sonic landscape to warrant microphone selection based on technical and artistic grounds, at least in some cases. So the humble microphone is the last area to get updated, as it were.

The importance of selecting a microphone that's going to work for the needs of any given artist, as well as the engineer(s), is paramount. DPA's d:facto has some unique features and a sonic quality that's as good as it gets. You would have to line this mic up for comparison against other similar products to make an informed choice, as again, it's about pairing the application with the product. Get the pairing right with this mic, however, and you really can't go wrong.
