Codex is delighted to announce that its digital workflow and recording products were extensively used in the production pipelines of nine motion pictures nominated at the prestigious 2014 Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) awards.
The movies - Captain Phillips (dir. Paul Greengrass), Gravity (dir. Alfonso Cuar n), Her (dir. Spike Jonze), The Wolf Of Wall Street (dir. Martin Scorsese), Prisoners (dir. Denis Villeneuve), Iron Man 3 (dir. Shane Black), The Lone Ranger (dir. Gore Verbinski), Rush (dir. Ron Howard) and Ida (dir. Pawel Pawlikowski) - variously feature in the nominations across the Best Picture, Cinematography, VFX and Editing categories.

With budgets ranging from $1m to over $100m, each of the nominated productions used Codex digital recorders and workflow products to capture ARRIRAW from ARRI Alexa cameras.
Codex was the sole recording technology on Gravity, Prisoners, Her, Iron Man 3 and Ida, and the chief digital technology on The Wolf Of Wall Street and The Lone Ranger (mostly captured on film). The significant use of Codex on Captain Phillips and Rush enabled the production and post production teams to work with the full latitude of the original digital footage - a significant advantage on location shoots with changeable lighting conditions. Codex also proved invaluable in the VFX workflows of Gravity, Iron Man 3 and The Lone Ranger.
Speaking about his choice of Codex for Prisoners, Roger Deakins OBE BSC ASC commented, I like the way the Codex equipment integrates so seamlessly with the Alexa camera.
Gravity cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki AMC ASC remarked, No other camera had the latitude and quality of the Alexa, and Codex allowed us to extract that. The amount of information and the quality of the information is far superior. It helped immensely on Gravity.
Lukasz Zal, cinematographer on the $1m Polish independent production Ida, said, During production on Ida, the great thing about Codex was that it was invisible - it just worked in the background without any problems.
