Overcoming Chaos with the Radical Action of Love, Focus of MLK Day Event on WRAL

The 41st Annual Triangle MLK, Jr. Holiday Celebration on Monday, January 18, 2021

For the first time in 41 years, Triangle residents will not be able to gather for the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Prayer Breakfast, but the event will go on, virtually. Capitol Broadcasting Company has proudly sponsored the MLK day breakfast for the past 35 years and will also provide the platforms via which virtual attendees can watch the 2021 event on Monday, January 18, 2021.

The Annual Triangle MLK, Jr. Holiday Celebration is a spiritual and community institution of more than 40 years, convening residents of all races, ages, genders, ethnicities and spiritual beliefs to honor the life and work of Dr. King and recommit to the continued pursuit of social justice.

2020 brought us face to face with grievous death due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, with brutal examples of sustained systemic violence, economic collapse, voter suppression and, now, the harrowing assault on our very democracy as armed domestic terrorists stormed the U.S. Capitol, explained the Triangle MLK Committee. In a year when so many of our trusted institutions faltered and failed, this group and this event stands resolute to our essential work of creating a better community for all.

For health safety reasons, the breakfast will be virtual. On the positive side, that means more people across the region and state can attend. The 8pm hour of the breakfast will be broadcast live on WRAL-TV. Or, for the entire program, visit WRAL.com starting at 7am.

Our theme, Love is the Way, the idea which Dr. King spoke and fought for more than half a century ago, remains the guiding light by which we will walk together and through the darkness, stated the Committee.

Reverend Michael Curry, presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church, and former bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, will provide the keynote address. His message, drawn from his latest book, Love is the Way: Holding on to Hope in Troubling Times, is one the Committee believes every person who calls the Triangle home should hear and take to heart. The televised event airs on WRAL-TV at 8am.
