The Documentary Filmmakers Association docLOVE screenings will launch with award-winning filmmaker, Rehad Desais, Everything Must Fall. The film has just been nominated for a South African Film and TV award and as reports of renewed student protests are hitting the news, the screening and discussion will join the current discourse on the issue.
Sandz Tshefu our docLOVE coordinator in Khayelitsha says: docLOVE has become such a great space and platform for film/documentary lovers and film-makers in Khayelitsha. As the Khayelitsha coordinator and a Filmmaker myself, I have for a long time felt disconnected to fellow filmmakers. This has been mainly because we worked so far from each other but are actually next-door neighbors - docLOVE has given us space and time to really get to know each other and collaborate.

EVERYTHING MUST FALL
An unflinching look at the #FeesMustFall student movement that burst onto the South African political landscape in 2015 as a protest over the cost of education. The story is told by four student leaders at Wits University and their Vice Chancellor, Adam Habib, a left-wing, former anti-apartheid student activist. When Habibs efforts to contain the protest fail, he brings 1000 police on to campus. There are dire consequences for the young leaders. By blending dramatic unfolding action with a multi-protagonist narrative, much of the drama lies in the internal struggles the activists have around the weight of leadership. Threaded through the film is a pulse of anticipation, shared across the generational divide, that somehow these youth have reached breaking point and wont back down until they achieve the kind of social transformation that previous generations had long given up on.
docLOVE screens in three venues around Cape Town, screenings start at 18:00
28 February: Tshisimani Centre for Activist Education, 67-69 Main Road, Mowbray
5 March: Guga Sthebe Centre, Langa. in partnership with Development Afrika Stratagem
6 March: The Bertha Movie House, Isivivana Centre, Khayalitsha. Entrance is Free.
