Trailer Tunes: e Bling Ring and Sleigh Bells Crown on the Ground

At the intersection of movie trailers and music, Sleigh Bells gets The Bling Ring dancing.

Theres always so much to unpack about a movie trailer: the stars, the plot, how much of the plot is being totally given away. But in many cases, the part of the trailer that sticks with you the longest is the music. Be it a pop song or a piece or orchestral score, its the music that most often makes a trailer.

This Weeks Trailer: The Bling Ring, the upcoming fifth feature from ennui chronicler extraordinaire Sofia Coppola. Its based on the true-life story of L.A. youths who robbed the homes of celebrities like Paris Hilton and Megan Fox. If the trailer -- and Coppolas track record -- are any indication, were in for a beautiful look at the aimless chasing of celebrity culture and Millennials being everything youve probably accused them of being. It looks amazing. Emma Watson leads a cast of under-the-radar young actors, dancing around clubs, trying on Paris Hiltons tacky clothes, mistaking designer lip gloss for status. Its going to be great.

This Weeks Tune: "Crown on the Ground," the 2010 song from noise-rockers Sleigh Bells.

How Literal Is It? The "dont give a fuck" attitude is right there in the lyrics -- "It doesnt bother us" / "Were in the spotlight," it all speaks to the state of mind of the Bling Ringers -- but its not like the song is called "Were Taking Your Stuff (Lindsay Lohan)."



How Emotional Is It? This song is a really great fit for the trailer, on a few levels. The atonal dance-music thing really captures the mood of heedless danger, that mixture of party pop and ugly distortion. It also promises something a bit more stylish and self-conscious (not a bad thing when it comes to Coppola, but definitely a thing) than the movie its certain to be compared to, Spring Breakers.

How Definitive Is It? Sleigh Bells is a pretty smart pick for trailer music because they havent been done to death yet. Unless you were playing the clip for the Taylor Lautner film Abduction over and over again.

Overall Trailer Tune Effectiveness: Its only a teaser, and there will likely be a more exposition-intensive clip on the way. But for setting the perfect mood and making Emma Watson look incredibly sexy and cool, this is a big blingy success.
