Cape Town weather: More rain heading to the Mother City this weekend

It's exactly what the people want to hear: The Cape Town weather forecast is predicting a wet weekend in the south-west, as a cold front prepares to make landfall by late on Friday evening.

Although the rainfall isn't exactly biblical this time (sorry Capetonians, you'll have to use your ark another time), every drop counts in a region that is still fighting tooth and nail against the threat of drought. According to Ventusky and weather.com, locals will have something to cheer.

Dam levels have dwindled over the past few months, as the summer season did what it does best sap a large portion of the water from our reserves. However, this picture is much rosier than it was in early 2018, and a good season of rain will go a long way towards alleviating any lingering day zero fears.

There will be bursts of rain on both Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Here's where the bulk of it is going, and what time you can expect the heavens to open even if they are only leaving their door ajar:

Cape Town weather for the weekend: Friday 12 April There will be a small band of rain pushing in a south-easterly direction on Friday evening. The Atlantic Seaboard will be the first to experience a few spots of the wet stuff, as it makes landfall just before 20:00. Don't worry if you get caught in this storm however; barely more than 1mm is likely to land in the city:

12 / 4 / 2019, 20:00 Photo: ventusky.com Cape Town weather for Saturday 13 April and Sunday 14 April On Saturday, patches of rain are more likely to form over the Cape Winelands area and Overstrand. The city doesn't seem to be on course for anything but a drop on this day. As was the case on Friday, there will be some low-lying fog around inland areas too.

13 / 4 / 2019, 12:00 Photo: ventusky.com On Sunday morning, the most intense rain of the weekend will make an appearance. But it's a shame most of us will be tucked up in bed before it comes. In the early hours, a few millimetres of rain should cascade over the Cape Town municipality, and reach down the coast as well.

14 / 4 / 2019. 5:00 Photo: ventusky.com From the rain first landing on Friday to its last drop on Sunday evening, it seems as if the Garden Route will see the heaviest downpours. Cape Town can expect a total of 4mm, which isn't bad going as we head towards the wetter months of May and June.

The dams won't exactly see their cups runneth over , but the Villiersdorp-based Theewaterskloof facility should pick up 2mm, whereas the Steenbras dams near Grabouw will get the best of it, as it looks like they'll accumulate 3mm over the weekend.
