The Premios Rory Peck de 2017 han reconocido el trabajo de profesionales independientes que trabajan detr s de la c mara en noticias y programas de actualidad. Adem s, dos pel culas del este de Alepo y otra de Mosul han sido galardonadas en el Sadler's Wells de Londres. Un trabajo fotogr fico de Myanmar tambi n fue galardonado en la ceremonia presentada por Lyse Doucet de la BBC y Katy Tur de la NBC.
El premio Rory Peck en la categor a de Noticias, patrocinado por Google, fue otorgado a la reportera gr fica siria Waad Al Kateab por su reportaje Inside Aleppo: The Last Hospital para Channel 4 News. Rodado en el hospital de Al-Quds en noviembre de 2016, documenta los horrores diarios de civiles y familias atrapados en el menguante enclave de la ciudad. El jurado determin que su reportaje es una obra period stica ejemplar . Aunque no se produjo ni un disparo, Waad nos muestra los horrores de la guerra de forma impactante .

El premio Rory Peck en la categor a de Mejor reportaje recay en el c mara y cineasta independiente franc s Oliver Sarbil por Battle for Mosul, un estudio ntimo y franco sobre la lenta y agobiante batalla para liberar a la gente de Mosul del denominado Estado Isl mico, narrada a trav s de los ojos de un grupo de hombres j venes del Primer Batall n de Iraq. Emitido por Channel 4 News, el jurado alab a Oliver por ser un brillante observador y por su incre ble metraje y su visi n ntima de la vida real en Mosul . Se trata de un trabajo fant stico y cautivador .

El galard n Sony Impact en la categor a de Actualidad recay en Siraj Al Deen Al Omar, Mojahed Abo Al Jood, Basim Ayyoubi y Ahmad Hashisho, cuatro j venes reporteros gr ficos sirios, por su pel cula Goodbye Aleppo para BBC Arabic. La pel cula es su historia personal de la ca da del este de Alepo a finales de 2016 y muestra c mo es la vida para una poblaci n en estado de sitio ante la inminente ca da de su ciudad. El jurado afirm que es el trabajo m s ntimo, apasionante y conmovedor que se puede ver sobre estos ltimos d as en Alepo . Es como una historia de amor o un diario de amor a su ciudad. Una pel cula soberbia y extraordinaria .
Richard Scott, responsable de Media Solutions en Sony Professional Solutions Europe, asegur que 2017 ha sido otro a o inolvidable para los reportajes de noticias y actualidad. Los finalistas del premio Sony Impact de este a o han aportado sus perspectivas nicas sobre acontecimientos internacionales, pero al mismo tiempo las tres pel culas est n unidas por el poder de sus im genes y su capacidad para conmovernos. El premio Martin Adler, patrocinado por Hexagon, se concedi al fot grafo birmano Minzayar Oo como reconocimiento a su trabajo en Myanmar. Este premio especial reconoce a un profesional independiente local que ha realizado una contribuci n importante a la recopilaci n de noticias, ya sea mediante una sola historia o una obra, pero que es casi desconocido para los medios de comunicaci n internacionales. Es el primer fot grafo que recibe el premio.
Tina Carr, directora de la Fundaci n Rory Peck, coment que estos premios se centran en reconocer a los profesionales independientes y los impactantes trabajos que producen. Pero con la celebraci n de estos logros tambi n somos conscientes de que los desaf os a los que se enfrentan cambian, crecen y llegan desde distintas fuentes.
