Ningbo unveils plan to develop first birds island refuge

Ningbo unveiled its plan to develop a national-level natural reserve in Jiushan islands as its plan has been approved recently.

According to the plan, Ningbo will develop Jiushan Islands into a natural reserve for the protection of wild birds, and a resort featuring its history as a military site and Buddhist culture.

Jiushan Islands, located in the bordering area between Zhoushan Fishing Ground and Yushan Fishing Ground, consists of 28 islands and 48 reefs. Named after its main island, South Jiushan Island, Jiushan Islands covers a total area of 7.3 square kilometers. Jiushan Islands has already owned a natural reserve approved in 2011 by the State Council. Covering a total area of 484.78 square kilometers, the natural reserve aims to protect rare fish and bird species as well as the ecosystem of the islands.

Scientific research shows Jiushan Islands has a rich fishery resources as a major spawning and feeding site for a number of important fish species like larimichthys crocea and mansoni. According to the plan, Ningbo shall make efforts to protect the ecosystem and restore its biodiversity of the islands through marine ranch and carbon sinks.

Meanwhile, Jiushan Islands Nature Reserve has very rich tourism resources. Field survey shows the area has a variety of bird species including waterfowl and porpoises, which is suitable for bird watching and fishing. South Jiushan Island is an ideal place for leisure and bird watching. Tourists can enjoy the sight of porpoises leaping over the sea and seagulls flying in the sky.
