TV and film composers celebrated at the Wawela Music Awards --

The Wawela Music Awards (WMAs), hosted by the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), is an event which recognises and awards local music creators which are members of SAMRO. Held on 26 June at Monte Casino in Johannesburg, the awards featured an audio visual category aimed at recognising composition and song-writing in the local television, film and advertising industries.
In this category the Statistical Award for Broadcast and Live performance, which is based on statistical information available at SAMRO, was given to Universal Music. In addition, composer Benjamin Willem was awarded the Best Soundtrack in a Feature Film or Theatric Documentary category; Brendan Smit won the Best Song or Composition in a Television Production; Jeremy Loops received the award for Best Song or Composition in a Television Commercial; and Alun Richards won the award for Best Song or Composition in a Radio Commercial.
According to the WMAs website, SAMRO CEO Sipho Dlamini said, South African song-writers, composers and producers are making great strides in raising the profile our industry domestically and abroad. This is what we at SAMRO are celebrating; the people behind the scenes that are making a difference and shaping the musical landscape. They are part of the driving force moving the music business forward, without them there would be no music. Today we acknowledge their work and celebrate with them.
