Key Products and Technology Demos

Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP)

At ANGA COM 2014, Harmonic will demonstrate powerful new features for its NSG Pro converged cable access platform (CCAP), including industry-leading QAM density of 45 (Annex A) or 56 (Annex B) downstream QAMS per port (which is software upgradable for even greater densities in the future), and Gbps+ data throughput for its upcoming CMTS capabilities. By providing exceptional performance, flexibility, and scalability, while lowering capital and operational expenses, NSG Pro helps service providers seamlessly adapt to industry changes, paving the way for a smooth transition to a full CCAP and an all-IP infrastructure in the future.

NEW Virtualized Media Processing and Delivery

Harmonic will show VOS at ANGA COM 2014, its new software-enabled platform for deploying a complete, virtualized media processing architecture. VOS unifies the entire media processing chain from ingest to delivery, providing operators with increased operational flexibility, scalability, and efficiency. Operating in IT data center environments, VOS can scale up or down to accommodate peaks in demand, based on capacity and functional requirements across all video services.

As part of the VOS demonstration, Harmonic will showcase the Electra XVM virtualized media processor, the industrys first software-based, fully converged, broadcast-ready media processing platform and the first product to leverage the broad capabilities of VOS. Integrating real-time encoding, high-quality branding and graphics, and transport stream playout for broadcast and multiscreen services, Electra XVM offers unparalleled function integration, increased operational flexibility, and unlimited scalability.

At the heart of Electra XVM is the Harmonic PURE Compression Engine . An advanced encoding technology that supports SD and HD MPEG-2, MPEG-4 AVC, and HEVC codecs over CBR as well as VBR and ABR encoding schemes, the Harmonic PURE Compression Engine powers Electra XVM with superior video quality at minimum bandwidth. Electra XVM can scale up or down based on required functions, formats, codecs, and encoding schemes to accommodate peaks in demand across both broadcast and multiscreen services. With its superior video quality, intelligent function integration, bandwidth efficiency, and workflow flexibility, Electra XVM is guaranteed to simplify an operators infrastructure, reduce costs, and drive new revenue-generating services.

Ultra HD

Harmonic will include a consumer-grade demonstration at ANGA COM 2014 showing live streaming of Ultra HD content, based on Harmonics VOS software-based media processing platform and the XCode 6400. The XCode 6400 is a 2160p60 10-bit SoC chip from ViXS Systems, used to decode and display live content to a UHDTV via HDMI 2.0.

Comprehensive Broadcast and Multiscreen Workflow

At ANGA COM 2014, Harmonic will highlight an end-to-end OTT multiscreen workflow with its ProMedia multiscreen preparation solution the market share leader in multiscreen software transcoding. The latest features for the ProMedia family of integrated software applications include support for HEVC encoding and Ultra HD video format; increased synergy with the Harmonic MediaGrid shared storage system for the delivery of time-shifted TV services; and support for closed captioning, regional blackouts, and local ad insertion.

These enhancements to the product family arrive at a time when service providers are looking to expand their portfolio with high-quality multiscreen services that scale and deliver amazing video.
