The Broadcasting Research Council of South Africa has compiled the top 10 shows on television. Here is the list for the most viewed soapies in South Africa.
1. Generations: The Legacy
Replaced the original Generations and brought back characters Karabo Moroka and Tau Mogale, who want to bolster the legacy of Paul Moroka, the businessman who created the featured media company.
2. 7de Laan
Mainly Afrikaans soapie with English subtitles. It has been around since 2000.
3. Isidingo: The Need
Set in the mining town of Horizon Deep, the show has reflected many South African issues, such as HIV/Aids, since it debuted in 1998.
4. The Bold and the Beautiful
American soapie set in Los Angeles that seems to have been running forever - the first episode aired in 1987.
5. Days of Our Lives
With the first episode airing in 1965, the veteran US show is set in the town of Salem.
6. Binnelanders
An Afrikaans soap on kykNET, Binnelanders is set in Binneland clinic in Pretoria.
7. The Young and the Restless
Another US old-timer, started in 1973.
8. Villa Rosa
Afrikaans kykNET soapie. It is set in a guesthouse in Bloemfontein .
9. Egoli: Place of Gold
The show ended in March 2010, but reruns continue to attract viewers.
10. Tinsel
Nigerias most successful soapie tells the story of two rival film production houses.
