48 Hour Film Project calls for entries

The entry deadline for the annual 48-Hour Film Project (48HFP) is approaching, with organisers Bench Films expanding the competition to George and surrounding areas this year.

We are expecting a bump up in teams competing, says Hisham Samie, producer at Bench Films. The tight deadline and not being able to do any pre-production really levels the playing field between the new filmmakers and more experienced filmmakers.

The 48HFP challenges entrants to write and produce a short five-minute film in 48 hours. Entering the competition before the early bird deadline of 25 September 2015 will save R200 off the entry fee. Early bird special ends on 25 September 2015.

The 48HFP takes place from the 30 October to the 1 November. All films submitted at 7pm on Sunday 1 November will be given to the judges the following day. The Cape Town screenings will take place on the 7th and 8th November at Ster Kinekor Nouveau at the Waterfront, and the George Screenings will take place at the George Arts Theatre. The winning film will be screened at Filmapalooza in Los Angeles, and the top ten films there will be screened at Cannes Short Film Corner in 2016.

The 48HFP offers new filmmakers the opportunity to turn out a short film in 48 Hours and test their skills under pressure, says Samie. They will find themselves confronted with many more 48 hour type deadlines in their careers and this is one way of putting what they know to test. For the more experienced filmmakers who know very well how long it takes to get a project off the ground, the 48HFP is an opportunity for them to flex their creative muscles and get a short film made in just 48 hours.

We have quite a few returning teams as well who are wanting to improve and submit stronger films, says Samie. With the 48HFP in its fourth year now, I hope to see more teams focusing on story and keeping their approach simple.
