UKTV has today announced the acquisition of CBS's medical drama series Emily Owen's M.D. for its popular female-skewing entertainment channel Really.
The series (13 x 60') stars Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife) in the eponymous title role - a geeky graduate leaving her days as an awkward student behind her and beginning an exciting new chapter as an intern at Denver Memorial Hospital.
However, the cliques that surround her are all too familiar: the jocks from school have become orthopedic surgeons; the mean girls are in plastics' and the rebels are in ER. Although one girl immediately latches on to Emily as a new friend, she also has to work alongside her arch nemesis from high school and her med-school crush. Emily soon discovers her new life is not so different to the one she was so eager to leave behind.
The series also stars Justin Hartley (Smallville), Michael Rady (Melrose Place), Aja Naomi King (Four), Kelly McCreary (Being Flynn) and Necar Zadegan (24).
Really's General Manager Clare Laycock, said
Really aspires to provide thoroughly entertaining content that matches the channel's brand positioning Really Gets You'. The experiences of Mamie Gummer's character are ones many of us can relate to in some way, which makes for addictive viewing and will get our viewers talking.
The deal was brokered by UKTV's Director of Programme Acquisitions, Catherine Mackin and Senior Vice President Europe at CBS Studios International, Stephen Tague.
Mackin commented
I am delighted to be continuing our successful partnership with CBS. Emily Owens M.D. will complement Really's existing drama slate including Hart of Dixie and Covert Affairs and it is another example of UKTV premiering hit US content to our viewers first, ahead of other UK broadcasters.
Tague said
With relatable, heartfelt storytelling and superb on-screen talent, Emily Owens M.D. is an excellent fit for UKTVs Really. This deal furthers the CBS tradition of providing quality content that delights and entertains British viewers.
The UK broadcast premiere of Emily Owens M.D will air on Really in August. The series is executive produced by Jennie Snyder Urman, who served as a Co-executive Producer and Writer on the US series 90210 and a Co-producer and Writer on Gilmore Girls, and Dan Jinks, who served as an Executive Producer on the US series Pushing Daisies. Really unveiled an updated on air identity in May, designed to reflect the mood of its audience through its branding. The refresh included vibrant idents and a new logo, giving the brand an energising, bold and honest look to mirror the fresh proposition and scope of the channel.
The latest season of CIA spy thriller Covert Affairs, starring Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham, has proved a hit on Really ( +169%) while the new season of Hart of Dixie continues to attract a large audience, averaging 249k. Aside from drama, the channel also regularly achieves audiences of around 250k with Paranormal Witness, and other popular titles include Ghost Adventures and Dr. G: Medical Examiner.
