David Chase spills tru about Tony Soprano s fate, en takes it back

One question has lingered long after HBO's iconic series The Sopranos came to a close: did Tony die or what?

Showrunner David Chase despises the very idea of people needing an actual answer, long suggesting it was irrelevant to the message being imparted in the show's final shot.

And yet, in an interview with Vox, Chase exasperatingly gave a definitive response to the question, eight years after the series ended.

So, is Tony dead?

He shook his head, no.' And he said simply, No he isn't.'

Chase offered no further explanation that is, until the story gained some traction online (because of course it would) and had his publicist take it back:

A journalist for Vox misconstrued what David Chase said in their interview. To simply quote David as saying, Tony Soprano is not dead,' is inaccurate. There is a much larger context for that statement and as such, it is not true.

As David Chase has said numerous times on the record, Whether Tony Soprano is alive or dead is not the point.' To continue to search for this answer is fruitless. The final scene of THE SOPRANOS raises a spiritual question that has no right or wrong answer.

So there you have it, kind of. Seems our endless search for clarity in an increasingly confusing world will continue onwards, filling us with further existential dread! Unfair. Even Tony Soprano got to exclaim I get it! at the end of the final season episode Kennedy and Heidi'.
