Explorer Post 5 Students Learn from WRAL-TV Doc Team

WRAL-TV's Documentary Team recently took time out of their busy schedules to talk to students in the WRAL Explorer Post 5 program. WRAL-TV Documentary & Investigative Producer/Reporter Cristin Severance and WRAL Documentary Photographer Dwayne Myers shared about their personal paths in broadcasting, documentary production and storytelling.

The pair used the openings to the WRAL Docs Ghosts in the Stadium and Pandemic Generation in their presentation. They set up lighting, a camera and mic, in the meeting space for an interactive demonstration for the students.

Thank you for answering all their questions! said WRAL-TV Programming Coordinator Melissa Heilicser, a Post 5 Advisor, to Severance and Myers. It's always interesting to see who speaks up and what they end of being curious about.

The WRAL Documentary Team are two of a long list of CBC staffers who share their time and knowledge with students throughout the school year.

Explorer Post 5 is the oldest communications post in the United States. Corp CEO & Board Chairman Jim Goodmon and engineer Powell Kidd started the program at WRAL, which is part of the Occoneechee Council Boy Scouts of America. Students, both male and female, between the ages of 14-20 can apply to participate.

The 6- to 8-month program meets weekly, giving students an opportunity for hands-on learning experiences in the newsroom, editing bays, in the field and more.

Most recently the students had an opportunity to actually produce a package for WRAL News, covering the Eagle Scout Banquet in Raleigh:
