Oscar-winning director James Cameron has supported plans to establish a purpose-built studio facility on the site of a former quarry.

In a letter to Buckinghamshire Council, the Titanic and Avatar director stated he was impressed by the Marlow Film Studios masterplan, which is currently being reviewed by the local authority.

Cameron predicted the UK film industry will continue to grow, with 2D-to-3D set to unfold in response to increasing consumer interest and new technology, and called for support and boldness in thinking, adding, The next iteration of screen storytelling requires a purpose built working space of exceptional quality, and trained professionals needed to grow the 3D market.

The director also said he recognised Marlow as a potential UK and European base for his new company, LIGHTSTORM 3D, with a training centre for creatives working in 3D production. Ending his letter, Cameron said: I look forward to Marlow Film Studios opening its doors in support of the next evolution of 3D.

The £3.5 billion proposals have attracted some controversy, with opposition from groups such as Save Marlow's Green Belt. In February, Marlow Film Studios submitted revisions which included plans to invest more than £20 million in local infrastructure. The council committee has deferred its decision while it considers local transport and environmental impacts.
