Directors, producers, film financiers, and philanthropists gathered at the Plage 45 Members Club, Cannes for the launch of the 8th tve Global Sustainability Film Awards. The beachside party, hosted by Surina Narula MBE, attracted guests from across the film industry, attending the 72nd Cannes Film Festival.
The tve Awards encourage business globally to showcase its commitment to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Two years ago Mrs Narula, who founded the tve Awards in 2012, created the Sustainability on the Big Screen Award to recognise how the feature film industry is engaging with the SDGs.
Energy companies, the food industry, fashion and travel - the Awards welcome entries from all areas of business that are moving us towards a more sustainable way of living,' says Lucy Walmsley, tve's business and sustainability coordinator. Our Big Screen Award recognises the role the feature film industry plays in engaging huge audiences with the urgent issues highlighted by the SDGs.'
Previous winners of the Sustainability on the Big Screen Award have included the films Lipstick Under My Burkha and Amerika Square.
tve is about triggering informed debate, and the Awards engage companies globally in the big debate about the responsibility they have to act sustainably,' says Mrs Narula, founder and CEO of Difficult Dialogues. We launch here in Cannes each year because we believe big screen productions can have a huge impact in addressing social injustice and the crisis of climate change.'

The tve Global Sustainability Film Awards are organised annually by the charity tve and are now in their 8th year. Jennifer Viccars, director of brand and marketing at Octopus Group, is president of the 2019 Awards which are now open for entries. Businesses and institutions globally are invited to enter films into the following competitive categories, which focus on the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Companies taking Climate Action,Transforming Society, Sustainable Transactions, Sky: Beyond Plastic, Infrastructures for the Future, and AI and Digital Innovation. tve will also run the nominated categories, The Founder's Award for Sustainability on the Big Screen, an award directed at feature length films addressing one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals; and the PA Award for Environmental Storytelling which celebrates UK television programming - news, current affairs and factual content in a range of formats which best engages the audience with the environment. gsfa.tve.org
tve is the non-profit based in London that organises the Awards. It creates and enables others to create powerful, effective communications about the environment and sustainable development. Through film, animation, documentaries, debates and social media, the media charity reaches global audiences, giving a voice to a new generation committed to a greener and fairer world. Sky has partnered with tve to sponsor the Beyond Plastic category for a second year. Through Sky Ocean Rescue, Sky is using its voice and reach to inspire simple, everyday changes to stop the oceans from drowning in plastic. Since January 2017 over 45.8 million people are aware of the campaign and 7 million Sky households have changed their attitudes towards single-use plastic. Sky has ambitious plans for future engagement with more ground-breaking content and sports partnerships. As a business, Sky is committed to leading by example and transforming its own business by eliminating all single use plastics from its operations by 2020. It is encouraging and supporting innovation to develop solutions through Sky Ocean Ventures, a 25M venture fund.
