wcom Brings Precision and Flexibility to FM Single Frequency Network Operation

2wcom has enhanced its FlexNsert range of radio distribution inserters to provide a precision solution for operators of SFN FM networks. Together with 2wcoms professional receiver/decoders, the FlexNsert technology locks the timing of the FM signal to keep all cells in the network perfectly synchronized.

Timing is a critical requirement for SFN networks, where many transmitters broadcast the signal on the same frequency to provide good coverage. SFNs can be deployed in digital networks such as DVB-T/T2 or for analog FM or AM broadcasting, but the challenge is always the same to ensure accurate synchronization between the transmitters.

2wcoms FlexNsert Distribution Inserter can now be used in the transmission feed as a timestamp generator, inserting the timing information into the MPEG stream. At the transmitter, the FlexDSR02/04 DVB Satellite Receiver analyzes the signals and ensures the exact timing of the FM transmission. Distribution can be by ASI, E1, IP or satellite, and any one of the feeds can be selected for backup purposes.

SFN is a popular option for broadcasters seeking a very efficient way to use spectrum, but the variety of contribution methods used by broadcasters today makes a comprehensive and completely accurate time-stamping solution essential, because each different contribution method introduces a varying element of delay into the signal chain, said Werner Drews, managing director of 2wcom.

2wcoms solution allows broadcasters to implement FM SFN networks using existing analog FM technology, with minimal additional hardware just one inserter for the uplink, and a receiver/decoder at each transmitter. The solution delivers precise, micro-second accurate synchronization of FM cells, with automatic adjustment of runtime differences caused by variable packet delays, jitter and satellite anomalies.
