DEAN STONEBACK JOINS SCTE AS SENIOR DIRECTOR OF ENGINEERING

Industry veteran to drive development of standards, recommended practices, training resources

JUNE 30, 2014 (Exton, PA) The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) today announced that Dean Stoneback, a veteran of more than 25 years in the cable telecommunications industry, has been named Senior Director of Engineering for SCTE.

Stoneback, who most recently served as senior technical marketing manager with ARRIS Group and as senior manager, systems engineering, access networks for Motorola, will be responsible for the development of standards, recommended practices and training material that can help cable efficiently and quickly deliver services that can attract and retain customers. Stoneback will report to Daniel Howard, senior vice president and CTO of SCTE.

"Throughout his career, Dean Stoneback's innovative approach, his commitment to technical excellence and his collaborative spirit have contributed to the growth of our industry," said Howard. "We anticipate that those same characteristics will be invaluable in creating the resources needed to pave the way for the services of tomorrow."

During his career with General Instrument, Motorola and ARRIS, Stoneback managed teams of engineers and technicians across such areas as systems engineering, hardware design, systems integration and testing. Among his accomplishments have been:

Invention of a methodology and development of system requirements for operating the return path on cable networks;

Authorship or contributions to multiple books, technical journals and other resources, including co-authorship with Donald Raskin of Broadband Return Systems for Hybrid Fiber/Coax Cable TV Networks in 1998; and

Patents for Parallel Split Powering (2011), Dynamic Upstream Attenuation for Ingress Noise Reduction (2006), BiDirectional CATV System Having Losses for Equalizing Upstream Communication Gain (1998) and Thermoelectric Cooler Control Circuit (1992).

An active member of the ANSI-accredited SCTE Standards Program, Stoneback in 2012 received the SCTE Excellence in Standards award, which honors an SCTE Standards Program participant who has significantly contributed to both the technical standards program and the spirit of cooperation necessary for the success of voluntary standards. He has been active on the SCTE Standards Program's Interface Practices Subcommittee (IPS) for more than 15 years and served as chair of the subcommittee's Working Group 4, which develops test procedures, and Working Group 5, which develops fiber-optic standards, including those for RFoG.

Stoneback was valedictorian at Geneva College, where he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Mathematics. He received his M.S in Electrical Engineering from Drexel University.
