New cloud DVR recording and delivery enhancements add to company's content delivery and origin acceleration solutions
London - March 18, 2014 - TV Connect Stand 73 - Edgeware, the technology leader in distributed video delivery, today announced enhancements to it's Distributed Video Delivery Network (D-VDN) and Origin Acceleration solutions through the addition of its new Orbit Unified Server and Convoy Management Software. The latest versions include substantial ingest performance increases through enhanced clustering of recording servers and a new, optimized file system for much faster storage retrieval and management of adaptive bit rate (ABR) recordings.
Pay-TV consumers expect the ability to pause, start-over and record programs, but the cost of supplying and maintaining home digital video recorders (DVRs) is becoming prohibitive. Therefore, a new breed of services is emerging: Cloud DVR and Catchup TV. Rather than every user making his or her own recordings, copies are made in the network and streamed to the subscribers on demand. Expensive home DVR set top boxes are replaced with thin' software clients running on CI cards or even software apps on connected TVs or gaming consoles. To enable this, service providers' content delivery networks (CDNs) and headends must be able to simultaneously and faultlessly record and deliver thousands of programs to millions of consumers.
Edgeware's latest D-VDN Solution enables service providers to efficiently record directly onto the CDN. The Edgeware Origin Accelerator Solution enables optimized recording in centralized or distributed headends for delivery to alternative, third-party CDNs. Recordings in both solutions can now be load balanced across multiple Edgeware Orbit 3020 or 3080 servers with N N redundancy, giving access to thousands of simultaneous recordings. As the same servers are also used for delivery, they can be deployed in a hierarchy to improve caching efficiency. For example, the last 48 hours of content can be recorded directly onto servers in distributed hubs, with the last seven days recorded in the headends to minimize cache misses. Older DVR recordings are off-loaded to low cost, network attached storage (NAS) archives.
As a single ABR recording can consists of multiple index files and many thousands of content files, writing and reading these at scale to low cost commodity NAS devices presents real performance challenge. Edgeware's D-VDN and Origin Acceleration solutions now include a new file system that archives these recordings into single, large file making writing and retrieving much less processor intensive and producing much higher throughput.
Cloud catchup and DVR services are emerging as the killer app for service providers with valuable live programming, said Jon Haley, vice president, marketing and business development at Edgeware. Recording and delivering these services efficiently requires a highly optimized solution such as those provided in our latest releases.
