Today is NHS Day

Today (Thursday 16th April) ITV is dedicating its whole day to all the NHS Heroes on the frontline fighting COVID 19.

ITV wants to thank and celebrate the incredible work of the NHS.

ITV's NHS Day will be taking over the regular schedule, with this morning's daytime content right the way through to News at Ten.

Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said:

The whole country is grateful to our NHS heroes on the front line of the battle against this virus.

I'm absolutely delighted that ITV are dedicating a day to celebrating the hard work and dedication of them all.

I want to thank not only those in NHS itself, but also all the families and friends that stand behind them.

The Million Claps appeal, in partnership with NHS Charities Together, sits at the heart of the day. We will encourage people to support the appeal by highlighting the heartfelt messages sent in by the public and by showing how much these thank yous mean to NHS carers.

NHS Charities Together Chief Executive Ellie Orton said:

We are so grateful to so many people for all they are doing to support our Covid-19 Urgent Appeal. The British public, as always, have shown their true spirit in not only thinking of others during this emergency but also in giving generously and if I could, I'd thank each, and every one of them.

With your help, we can continue to support our NHS heroes, including all who are working so hard for us - the doctors, nurses, cleaners, porters, volunteers and patients themselves.

We can only appreciate how hard it is to be so very ill and isolated from your family and friends. By being in this together, we have provided patients with electronic communications to keep those vital connections going in their time of need and we are making sure that all NHS staff and volunteers can take critical rest and recuperate in wellbeing centres and from nutritious food and drinks.

With this amazing support from ITV today in celebrating and thanking the NHS and in supporting our #OneMillionClaps text-to-donate campaign, we are not stopping there. Given the incredible and traumatising impact of Covid-19, we are also focusing on longer term mental health support and in addition, through social partnerships, help patients home from hospital quickly and safely and where we are able, prevent admissions to hospital with greater support at home.

Meanwhile, in an unprecedented TV moment, directly after the weekly Clap for Carers moment,ITV will this evening broadcast a touching two-minute tribute direct from the doctors, nurses and care staff working on the frontline giving thanks to the nation for staying indoors and for all their support and love during these unprecedented times.
