New Projects Snag FilmMart Awards

The CineMart award, sponsored by the Intl Film Festival of Rotterdam's co-prod market, went to helmer Amirah Tajdin's Hawa Hawaii (Kenya), produced by Wafa Mohamed Tajdin, Bongiwe Selane, Helena Spring and Junaid Ahmed. The winners are invited to attend the Rotterdam Lab, a five-day training and networking event for producers from around the world.

Hawa Hawaii also won the award sponsored by Produire au Sud of Festival des 3 Continents (Nantes), inviting the director and producers to a week-long developmental workshop program that will allow them to tap into European networks.

The Intl. Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) gave its Most Promising Documentary Pitch award to The Sound of Masks (South Africa), directed by Kofi Zwana and produced by Sara Gouveia. The duo will receive an IDFA and Forum Pass, as well as mentoring on how to make the most of the festival.

The New Cinema Network award was given to Alex on Seventh (South Africa), directed by Engelbert Phiri and produced by Guy Bragge, who will be invited to attend the NCN in Rome.

The Docubox award, a $2,500 development prize from the East African doc fund, was given to In Search of African Duende: The Uganda Flamenco Project (Uganda), by helmer Caroline Kamya and producer Keren Cogan.

Restless Talent Management, a global management company for African talent, gave its Restless Talent Pitch award to Shattered (South Africa), by Philani Ndaba, who received a one-year representation deal that will include development services such as image-building and positioning, project packaging and PR, and will also receive advice on film sales, distrib, and promotion.

The Organisation Internationale de Francophonie (OIF) awarded a 5,000 ($6,742) prize to Home Expulsion (Rwanda), directed and produced by Kayambi Musafiri.

The Wound (South Africa), directed by John Trengove and produced by Elias Ribeiro, received 6,000 ($8,090) for the ARTE France International Prize.

Videovision Entertainment's prize for Best South African Film Project went to Nyanga Sky (South Africa), directed by Matthew Griffiths and produced by Rafeeqah Galant. The award includes a R75,000 ($7,062) cash prize and a guarantee of release once the project is completed, along with marketing and distrib support from Videovision.

Afridocs, a new award inspired by the Durban FilmMart, was given to Amal (Egypt), by Mohamed Siam.
