Goalkeeping woes persist as Kaizer Chiefs drop points again

It looks as if casting aside the erroneous Virgil Vries hasn't proven to be a quick fix to Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeping woes.

Amakhosi found themselves having to share the spoils in the league once more as they were held to a one-all draw by Polokwane City at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.

This was after Daniel Cardoso's opener from the penalty spot his third for the season was cancelled out by a Walter Musona strike, which had more to do with Nigerian international, Daniel Akpeyi's failure to keep the shot out than it did the power behind it.

How the Soweto giants conceded was all too familiar, as dodgy goalkeeping has dodged their title charge since club captain, Itumeleng Khune was ruled out of the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Since the Bafana veteran's withdrawal, coach Ernst Middendorp has handed Vries the gloves, before admitting that the Namibian international had failed to impress, giving new recruit, Akpeyi the honour of being the first-choice option, with rising star, Bruce Bvuma as his understudy.

The change has so far not proved effective as the Glamour Boys dropped two more points, only jumping up one spot to sixth on the log with just nine matches remaining in their league campaign.

Kaizer Chiefs have another lifeline in their bid for silverware, with three more fixtures standing in the way of Nedbank Cup glory the most immediate of those being a quarterfinal clash against Cape Town City at home.

In their charge for league glory, they have faced most of their league rivals, and have a relatively easy run in to the end of the season.
