SoCal Connected Unears Controversial Fracking Industry in Inglewood

SOCAL CONNECTED UNEARTHS CONTROVERSIAL FRACKING INDUSTRY IN INGLEWOOD AND HOW TO PRESERVE AGING PARENTS INDEPENDENCE

Los Angeles, CA - March 21, 2012 - This week SoCal Connected correspondent Jennifer London reports on a controversial oil and gas drilling technique that has some L.A. county residents worried. As the fourth largest producer of oil and gas in the nation, California companies, like Inglewoods Plains Exploration Production are turning to a controversial method of drilling called fracking. Residents are concerned that what is happening miles below the surface is splitting the very foundations of their homes.

Then, in our continuing series exploring the emotional impact caregiving has on families, SoCal Connected profiles a family dealing with the issue of taking away the car keys from an aging parent and what that loss of freedom means for her.

THE F WORD

California is the fourth largest producer of oil and gas in America. To stay competitive, many companies, like Plains Exploration and Production (PXP) in Inglewood, are using a controversial technique called Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) to extract oil and gas trapped in rock formations deep below the surface. The method involves pumping highly pressurized water, sand and various chemicals to shatter the rocks miles under, allowing the elements to then escape. Oil and gas companies claim it is safe and effective, critics are uncertain. Under current laws, the oil companies dont need permits--nor do they disclose where they are fracking.

TAKING THE KEYS

In our ongoing series profiling the challenges of caregiving, this segment features a family dealing with the issue of taking away the car keys from an aging parent, as well as the desperation felt by the mothers loss of her drivers license. When the mother is required to take a driving test at the age of 75, her very independence is at stake.

SoCal Connected airs Friday, March 23rd at 9 p.m. with encore airings on Saturdays at 6 p.m., Sundays at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and Mondays at 10 p.m.
