Cine Gear Expo drew the world's top motion picture, video and new media community for the unveiling of the latest industry technology and to discuss the latest trends. There were 15,490 attendees from 48 countries at the event.
A highlight of the confab was a 4K screening of Tomorrowland and Q&A panel with the film's creators. Other screenings, panels and educational sessions covered motion picture workflow from acquisition through post-production. Nearly 300 exhibitors showed their newest technology to the industry attendees.
Cine Gear brought together leading experts including Peter Anderson, ASC - Tech Awards Chairman, Dwight Campbell, Dana Christiaansen, Gary Ushino, Daron James, Harry Rez, Mark Weingartner, Joe di Gennaro and Mike Brodersen to judge almost a hundred nominees for the Hollywood Cine Gear Expo 2015 Technical Awards.
Winners including Panther GmbH and Camadeus Film Technologies' Panther Precision Leveling Track won the judges over for their new concept track that saves time on set with its integrated leveling system. The Modtruss Truss system was another winner due to its lightweight aluminum construction and universal limitless buildup possibilities. Hive Lighting partnered with FreeWire to create the winning FreeWire Mobile Energy Storage system.
The jam packed lighting category was won by Sumolight's Sumospace Light, their next generation bi-color fixture with the output of a 6K space light and the power consumption of an LED. When it came to cameras, Arri's much anticipated 5-pound ALEXA Mini topped the list due to features like its capability to record ProRes 1K and Arri RAW to CFast 2.0 cards.
Sony took home two awards starting with its impressive BVM-X300 4K reference monitor that offers high dynamic range and a wide color gamut display. In the Post/Sound category, judges were wowed by the Sony Creative Software Spectra Layers Pro3, that allows working with individual sounds in an audio file as if they were objects in a photograph.
A slew of honorable mentions got thumbs up from the judges including Cineo Lighting's Matchbox portable remote-phosphor fixture and Innocinema/Action Products' Runner camera stabilizer with an exo-skeleton design. Flanders Scientific caught their eye with the DM250 24.5 10 bit OLED Monitor capable of reproducing over 1.073 billion colors on screen. As did ETC's Source Four LED Series 2 Daylight HD and Tungsten HD lights and the Macom 12G-SDI Chipset that supports 4K video resolution at 60 fps over a single coaxial cable or optical fiber.
Another honorable mention was given to DPS Cinema's Enhanced Environment Process (used on Tomorrowland) that demonstrated their method of extending the sightlines of live sets using media (LED, projector, etc.) to allow talent and crew to visualize actual environments, rather than working in a green screen world. The LaCie 48TB 8big Rack Thunderbolt Raid 8-bay got the nod for its ability to store large files such as 4K video and RAW photos. Plus, Filmotechnic's Auto Robot Mini (Russian Arm Mini) proved that performance in speed, image stabilization, flexibility and control is sure to turn heads.
