New Afrikaans film gets sold in America

Afrikaans movie Musiek vir die Agtergrond will be released in the US through media company D Street. Directed by Salmon de Jager. With John-Henry Opperman, Lizelle de Klerk, Br milda van Rensburg, Terence Bridgett.

The movie is the directorial debut for Sallas de Jager and was produced by Bosbok 6 Films - who also produced Roepman and Verraaiers - in conjunction with Film Factory and D Street. De Jager believes the theme of the movie will appeal to people on a global scale and is very excited about it being screened in America.

We, cast and crew, have worked hard on our craft as filmmakers and are motivated to work even harder now that we know that our work will be seen by an audience used to only seeing the best, said De Jager in a press release.

The CEO of D Street, Dexter Davis, who was also one of the executive producers on the project, has great confidence in the first-time director. Sallass directorial debut underscores the tremendous talent he has as a multifaceted filmmaker. We are thrilled about Background Music and cant wait to bring it to the US audience.

Future collaborations in the works

D Street was so impressed with the director that they have asked De Jager to produce two films for the company in the next three years, a drama set in South Africa and a courtroom film set in World War II Germany and America.

We have great faith in Sallas as a director and wanted to give him an opportunity to spread his wings internationally. 1961 in particular was written by an American filmmaker with a Sundance pedigree and the excitement to produce and shoot this film as a South African production is beyond amazing, said Davis.

Musiek vir die Agtergrond is a story about a musician who lives on a hand-to-mouth existence playing in pubs until he is discovered by a music producer. Unfortunately, he has to conform to a stage identity he vowed never to become, and is seduced by fame and money to become a sell-out.

Musiek vir die Agtergrond will be opening in cinemas next Friday, 11 October and De Jagers fourth film as producer, Stuur groete aan Mannetjies Roux will be released in South Africa on 13 December 2013.
