MarkLogic aids BBC Store creation

MarkLogic has been selected by the BBC to provide the database platform at the heart of the BBC Store.

The operational and transactional Enterprise NoSQL database provider has worked with the BBC in the past, with its platform installed as part of the BBC iPlayer service as well as multiple sections of the BBC Sport website.

MarkLogic stated that its database aids BBC Worldwide deliver content incredibly quickly to BBC Store web pages. It also provides the enterprise-hardened features and scalability needed to support high request volumes.

BBC Worldwide has chosen to run BBC Store on the MarkLogic database to help optimise many of these data assets and deliver a new revenue stream, added Adrian Carr, senior vice president of worldwide enterprises sales at MarkLogic.

Because it is powered by the MarkLogic database, BBC Store can cope with fluctuations in demand and offers a fantastic download-to-own experience to fans of BBC programmes.

Launched in November 2015, BBC Store is a new digital service designed to enable audiences to instantly buy and keep digital copies of the latest drama, comedy and factual shows, as well as classic titles from the BBC archive. Over 7,000 hours of content are currently available and shows can be accessed on a number of platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, iOS and Android.

Jonathan Green, director of the BBC Store, said, BBC Store lets us offer lovers of BBC programmes easy access to a vast catalogue of new and archived content.

Until now, over 90 per cent of BBC programmes have been unavailable to buy once they had been transmitted. We're at the beginning of an exciting journey to unlock the incredible BBC Television archive.
