SA films earn Cannes succe

South African films represented at this years Cannes Film Festival, which ran from 14 to 25 May, with many of our local productions securing potential deals with international companies and distributors.

The local film showcase was presented by the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Film commission (KZNFC), Durban Film Office (DFO) and WESGRO.

One of the biggest successes at the festival was the deal that comedian and filmmaker David Kau secured with US company Archstone Pictures to produce and distribute his movie Sekwankwetla.

The much-hyped Afrikaans indie film, Pad na jou Hart was selected for release in Australia, while Enigma Pictures producer Greig Buckle will co-produce the film One with US independent film production, financing and sales distribution company Main Street Films; MK Create, an extension of Australian film company M2 Entertainment; and Kent Smith, producer for the Kojo Group.

SA dance film Hear Me Move also caught the interest of UK and US distribution companies, who will reportedly continue discussions around a distribution deal over the next few months.

The NFVF celebrated South Africas 20 years of freedom by organising a number of activations at Cannes, orchestrating co-production forums with Brazil, Canada and the UK and showcasing screenings of iNumber Number, Nelson Mandela: The Myth and Me, Miners Shot Down and One Humanity.

In addition to the films showcased at Cannes, five local filmmakers went through the Creative Minds programme, which gives emerging talents the opportunity to show off their work and connect with influential people and companies.

The Department of Trade and Industry also funded a group of young South African filmmakers to travel and participate in the festival as part of the Association for Transformation in Film and Television.
