Four Corners receives record Golden Horn nominations

The award winning coming of age thriller Four Corners has made history by securing the youngest ever SAFTA Best Actor nomination for first time actor, Jezzriel Skei. The Joburg school goer, who performed the role at age 13, has been commended for his landmark lead performance as Ricardo, the talented chess whizz kid living in jeopardy of gangs controlling the streets he lives in on the Cape Flats.

Four Corners garnered a record 13 nominations out of 14 categories at the 2015 SAFTAS, including Best Film, Best Director (Ian Gabriel), Best Actor (Jezzriel Skei), and 2 Best Supporting Actor Nominations (Brendon Daniels and Irshaad Ally).

We made this film to draw attention to the crisis on the Cape Flats said director Ian Gabriel. The community is the principal character in our film. Like many other marginalised communities across the country, the Cape Flats needs our support, encouragement, investment and daily commitment so that the cycle of violence against our youth and the culture of violence in our society can be broken. Give our youth leadership roles and they will rise to the challenge and steer our country away from the senseless violence that is a terrible and destructive relic from this country's past. Its a fitting honour for youth that our young actor Jezzriel Skei, who delivers one of many youth performances in our movie, has achieved this remarkable distinction.

Other nominations include Best Cinematography (Vicci Turpin), Best Original Film Score (Marcus Wormstorm), Best Editor (Ronelle Loots), Best Screenplay (Hofmeyr Scholtz and Terence Hammond), Best Art Direction (Chris Bass), Best Wardrobe Design (Sylvia van Heerden), Best Sound Design (Barry Donnelly) and Best Achievement in Make Up and Hairstyling (Carla Fourie).

These nominations proudly celebrate the talent of artists working in South African filmmaking across the spectrum of motion picture arts and science. We are honoured to be represented in every category, and recognise our cast and crew for their dedicated contribution towards excellence in the South African film industry. We also congratulate other nominees in the feature film category for the competitive calibre of work produced, said the films producers Cindy Gabriel and Genevieve Hofmeyr.

This week, Four Corners competes for the Best Film Accolade at Fespaco in Ougadougou. Fespaco is the oldest and most prestigious feature film competition in Africa. To date Four Corners has won three Best Film accolades, two at Santa Fe Independent Film Festival (Best Film and Best International Film) and one at the Niagara Film Festival in Canada. Four Corners received a second place Best Film Youth Jury Award at Giffoni in Italy.

Four Corners was produced by Giant Films with Moonlighting Films and was made with the support and participation of the National Film and Video Foundation, the Industrial Development Corporation and the Department of Trade and Industry.

The film is available on DVD in South Africa and neighbouring territories through Takealot and at most DVD outlets and opens theatrically in theUnited Kingdom in June 2015 where it will be distributed by niche market distributors Munro Films.
