Coventry Children: Engineers of the Future

Coventry children design and create extraordinary structures

75 children aged 9 10 years, from three Coventry city schools have worked with artists, designers and engineers at Imagineer Productions to create three amazing moving vehicles which will lead Godiva's new procession and open the Festival of Imagineers on 9 August in Coventry.

Clare Gibson, Assistant Head Teacher at St Mary and St Benedick's RC Catholic Primary School said: This has been a fantastic opportunity for the children involved. It has been a way for children to explore engineering and the arts in a hands-on way to create an amazing moving construction.

They really have explored engineering and the arts and how you can combine them and in a live project that's part of something bigger.

The young people, from St Mary and St Benedict's RC Catholic Primary School, Broad Heath Community Primary School and Edgwick Community Primary School have imagined, sketched, and designed three extraordinary mini-cyclopedias as well as developed performance ideas for performers to accompany their structures in the procession to take place in Broadgate.

Himani Patel, from St Mary and St Benedick's RC Catholic Primary School aged 10 said: Now that it's made I feel really proud having had the opportunity to be part of an arts and engineering process that the whole of Coventry will see!

Curated by Imagineer Productions, the Festival of Imagineers is a new outdoor event bringing together creative industries with visionaries from the worlds of design, technology and engineering for a day of performances and amazing activities.

Jane Hytch, Chief Executive Imagineer Productions said: It has been wonderful working with the young people, we have been inspired by their vision and creativity, their enthusiasm and their commitment to the project. The mini-cyclopedia's they have created are fantastic and will look amazing alongside Godiva and our new procession. The children invite the people of Coventry to come and see their ideas on 9 August.

The project is part of Imagineer Productions Imagineerium initiative which creates physical space, frameworks and opportunities for young people to gain hands on experience of how arts and science processes can connect to enable extraordinary things to be created. The Imagineerium builds on Imagineers experience of imagining, engineering, creating and delivering the Godiva Awakes project.

The Festival of Imagineers is supported by Imagineers and business patrons including The Imagineering Foundation; Premier Group; Coventry Transport Museum; Coventry University; Whitefriars Housing; Imagineer Technologies; IET; Shaw Sheet Metal; MIRA. Their support is an investment in the future of creative engineering in Coventry through projects like the Imagineerium.

The Festival of Imagineers takes place on Saturday 9 August and runs from 11am 5pm in Broadgate and from 5pm in the Cathedral Ruins.
