A recent survey of our website visitors indicated that when it comes to video challenges; storage represents a significant business difficulty prior to the implementation and use of Aframe.
Experience indicates though, that it is not necessarily storage in its own right that is an issue; the reality is that the problems around storage are multi-faceted, and in today's fast-paced environment where organisations are being challenged to do more with less, the real pain points lie in active storage and archiving.
It is not uncommon (indeed, it is still standard) for video data to be backed-up and stored on tape or hard drive for long-term purposes because the cost of digital storage remains prohibitive. This means that this data effectively goes into a giant loft, and then gets forgotten. No-one curates this content or manages it, so no-one is able to retrieve relevant data when it might be needed. Now this might be fine when all you're doing is storing old footage, but in recent years the game has changed. It is well known that shoot ratios have risen dramatically in the last decade or so, which in turn has led to an ever-increasing difficulty in organising and finding precise moments of footage: the proverbial needle-in-haystack scenario. Production companies are also increasingly pushed to do more with less. This doesn't mean cutting back on the amount of footage created, but to look at methods of reusing that unused content.
This is where Aframe is proven to provide significant value. Where organisations have a huge amount of material and data that they need to manipulate, and need to store it somewhere that they can access very quickly and easily, Aframe can help them index the precise bits of footage they need and then bring those into the edit.
Aframe's software sits on the top of the storage layer, which allows organisations to manipulate their footage, bring data in and out easily, review and delete unneeded content, add metadata to it and transcode it for different purposes.
In this scenario, the storage and archiving challenge is transformed from a specific, isolated pain point, to part of a workflow; an environment where the data is well-curated and becomes dynamic, easily understood, shared, accessed and retrieved in the same way that Wikipedia has transformed the way in which we access so called facts'.
Being able to get into your loft and quickly find the thing you wanted is more important than how big your loft is; and that is the real video storage challenge.
