MOG technologies, the worldwide supplier for both centralized ingest solutions and MXF development tools has been selected to provide its mxfSPEEDRAIL centralized ingest solutions for the coverage of the World Cup, with ARD and ZDF German broadcasters, through the broadcast service provider HDSIGNS. The installation was successfully made through MOG's corporate partner Media Online GmbH, which provides complete systems integration consulting and technical support for the German market.
HDSIGNS is a German service company specialized in the outside broadcasting and studio productions. The company offers a comprehensive range of services around mobile productions and is responsible for the consulting and design of several production workflows in major worldwide broadcasters.
For the Brazilian World Cup, HDSIGNS is providing the mobile facilities for the Right Holder Broadcasters ARD and ZDF. The German public-service broadcasters are transmitting the World Cup in its entirety, splitting the live coverage of all 64 matches, hosted by Brazil.
In such a distinct logistical challenge like the World Cup, broadcasters need to ensure flexibility and work with technology experts ensuring the maximum performance, quality and swiftness on the contents delivery.
This is probably the most widely viewed sporting event in the world, and the technical set needs to be ready to handle the most defying conditions. For this reason, HDSIGNS is using MOG' powerful and flexible multi-format SDI recording system, deployed at the 2 OB trucks operated by ARD and ZDF at the matches' coverage.
The workflow consists in 4 SDI Recorders, based on mxfSPEEDRAIL S1000 technology that is recording the live matches in DNxHD145 OPAtom format with AAF into an AVID shared storage. Onsite, the editors are using the innovative edit-while-capture capability from mxfSPEEDRAIL, which allow them to use Media Composer editing suites even while the system is still transferring the contents. This saves time and resources and enables editors to have contents immediately available for news or background programs broadcasting. The OB trucks and the editing suites are shared by ARD and ZDF, depending on the station that is doing the transmission.
With mxfSPEEDRAIL the German broadcasters are increasing shooting and editing productivity by reducing the complexity on such a multi-camera environment like the World Cup. ARD and ZDF are also perfectly able to control the several input feeds from the matches at the same time and start capturing a video feed while the underlying files are still growing, reducing the need for extra automation systems. The edit-while-capture capability is a must have for the coverage of such a demanding sport game.
mxfSPEEDRAIL is playing an important role in the live-feeds distribution, by matching such challenge environment requirements with innovative features like scheduled capture which enables increased automation and flexibility, live-feeds recording and optional fallback storage to ensure redundancy and avoid the loss of the captured media contents.
Additionally, mxfSPEEDRAIL S1000 reduces the complexity on multi-camera environments, perfectly controlling several input feeds at the same time and enabling metadata application to all the controlled systems. The system also enables the remote monitoring through a web-browser, making the system available whatever the location of the OB van is.
