National Geographic Magazine Hires Bloomberg News Editor Susan Goldberg to Head Magazine s Text Team

WASHINGTON (Jan. 2, 2014)-National Geographic announced today that Susan Goldberg will join National Geographic magazine as executive editor for text, starting Monday, Jan. 6. She will be in charge of the magazine's award-winning writing staff, which includes 18 full-time editors and writers and a cast of contributing writers including Garrison Keillor, David Quammen, Cynthia Gorney, Alexandra Fuller, Jonathan Franzen and James Verini.

Reporting to Editor in Chief Chris Johns, Goldberg will be responsible for all writing and editing associated with the magazine's print and digital content. In addition to defining the vision and voice for text reporting, she will serve an important role in developing collaborative content opportunities across media divisions within the National Geographic Society.

Goldberg leaves Bloomberg News, where she was executive editor for federal, state and local government coverage. Prior to joining Bloomberg, she was editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the largest newspaper in Ohio, and executive editor of the San Jose Mercury News. She also served as managing editor of the San Jose Mercury News and deputy managing editor of the News, Life and Enterprise sections of USA Today. While at the San Jose Mercury News, Goldberg was a key leader of the local coverage after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake that won a staff Pulitzer Prize for general news reporting.

Goldberg began her career as a reporter at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and also worked as a reporter and editor at the Detroit Free Press. Currently she is on the steering committee of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and is on the board of the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She served as president of the American Society of News Editors from 2012 to 2013.
