Story Highlights
For NFL Media, it simply doesn't get any bigger than the Draft. Now in its 19th year of onsite coverage, NFL Network is providing comprehensive coverage this week from multiple locations in Green Bay, WI, and the league's NFL West facility at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, CA, is home to shoulder programming, NFL Digital Media, and a hub coordinating dozens of remote feeds from around the country.
NFL Network is now in its 19th year of onsite coverage for the NFL Draft.
I'm so proud of the team for getting all our sets and infrastructure up and running, says Jessica Lee, VP, production operations and engineering, NFL Media. Green Bay has presented weather challenges that have stalled our setup for periods, so the team has had to work that much harder to keep things on track. There has also been great collaboration between our team in the field and L.A.
In all, the league's NFL Media platforms - NFL Network, NFL Films, NFL.com, NFL+, the NFL app, NFL RedZone, and free ad-supported television-streaming (FAST) service NFL Channel - will combine to deliver more than 50 hours of live coverage throughout Draft Week.
The primary NFL Network broadcast is being produced out of NEP SuperShooter CBS mobile unit onsite in Green Bay; control rooms in Los Angeles are handling all other shows. For the first time, NFL Media worked with ESPN/ABC to integrate NEP's TFC Network in the compound to link its SuperShooter CBS (led by Ethan Balcer and Chris Monroe), with ESPN/ABC's EN1 mobile unit (led by Jack Coffey and Joe Rainey).
NFL Network's Main Desk is located inside the theater right behind the crowd and will be manned by Rich Eisen, Daniel Jeremiah, Charles Davis, and Joel Klatt. In addition, a secondary set features Ian Rapoport (along with Kurt Warner on opening night), and reporter Jamie Erdahl will have a location on stage for player interviews.
NFL Network has also deployed reporters at the team headquarters for several of the top picks, including the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, New Orleans Saints, and Chicago Bears.
A JitaCam hangs from the top of the theater, offering a sweeping aerial perspective of the stage and the fans in the tent.
NFL Media is orchestrating camera feeds from all 23 remote prospects and 32 team Draft Rooms via LiveU systems. The feeds are shared with ESPN/ABC and the in-house venue/event production and are also sent to Hollywood Park for NFL Digital coverage of the Draft. Additionally, a total of 17 team Draft Party feeds will be delivered to the NFL West facility and sent to the NEP truck onsite for incorporation into the linear broadcast.
NFL Media also coordinates with Van Wagner (led by Director, Technical Operations, Nate McCoart and Manager, Technical Operations, Cameron Epperson) and Game Creek Video to distribute 80+ feeds for the various Draft shows.
Among the highlights for this year's camera complement is a JitaCam that hangs from the top of the theater and offers a sweeping aerial perspective of the stage and the fans in the tent. NFL Media has also rolled seven Fletcher robos throughout the area, including on the roofline of the Draft Theater and on the fourth floor of Lambeau Field. Between its own cameras, shared feeds with ESPN and Van Wagner, and the throng of remote video feeds coming in from around the country, NFL Network's production team has plenty of sources to populate its Draft broadcast.
In addition to Lee, the multipronged operation in Green Bay and L.A. is being overseen by Lead Tech Manager Ethan Balcer; Operations Manager Margaret Thompson; and Senior Director, Engineering, Lorey Andres.
